.

Michael Lee Firkins - "Yep"

Firkins gained fresh perspective in other musical ways, as well. A number of songs on Yep, including “Cajun Boogie” and the leadoff track “Golden Oldie”, feature an electric “Reso-Tele,” a guitar Firkins designed with the help of a woodworker friend. Fusing a resonator cone and the body and neck of a Fender Telecaster, the electrified roots rocker has built the perfect instrument with which to express himself.

“The Reso electric guitar was an integral part of my journey,” says Firkins. “When I first started this record I had been playing acoustic guitar a lot, and wasn’t really into the electric. But since I started using the Reso-Tele, I’ve designed my sound around the instrument, and tried to use it on as many tracks as possible for Yep.”

Attention Deficit - "The Idiot King" review

Attention Deficit - "The Idiot King"

Attention Deficit is:
• Alex Skolnick - guitars • Michael Manring - bass • Tim Alexander - drums

Listen to Sound Samples:
Attention Deficit on Magna Carta

In their sophomore effort "The Idiot King", Attention Deficit created a more elaborated repertoire than the one comprised in their debut album, which was mostly devoted to the articulation and expansion of various jams. Since there's a major dose of creativity in the writing process, the variety in the musical ideas and rhythmic variations has allowed the trio to generate a more focused power within the stylistic confines inherent to its trio format. Jamming, there is much of it here, too, but generally speaking, this is a more composed album. The shocking aspect of the first album may seem a bit less impressive because "The Idiot King" bears a less urgent feel, but as I said earlier, the energy is not diminished but refurbished in a more focused fashion.

'American Jingo' starts with a ¾ motif in which playfulness and tension state a sense of aggressiveness, latent most of the time. 'Any Unforeseen Event' finds the band exploring more relaxing ambiences, under what I feel is the elegant facet of classic Holdsworth. Since it lasts only 3 minutes, I believe it is too short to properly explore its full potential. A special mention goes to Manring's amazing bass lines stuck somewhere in the middle-. The Holdsworth reference becomes more explicit in 'RSVP' (a personal highlight from this album) and 'Dubya', pieces that go headlong for the dense side of your typical jazz-rock power trio sound, even forming adequate expansions.

Things turn closer to the funky side of things with 'The Risk of Failure', a piece that includes certain Crimsonian trends, especially in some phrases by Skolnick: drummer Tim Alexander shines here with particular brilliancy. A second portion finds the band moving to jazzier structures, with Skolnick showing off his skills and melodic sensibility equally. 'Unclear, Inarticulate Things' is one definitive showcase for Manring's proficiency: Michael uses his prowess to state a precise rhythmic cadence and a solid set of skilful phrases, forcing Skolnick to indulge in some guitar pyrotechnics. The use of mutual challenging in a power trio context is creatively convenient when you have musicians totally committed to each other as these three are. 'The Killers Are to Blame' is the sickest piece in the album, with those combined guitar and bass soundscapes flowing as reckless purveyors of tension, while Alexander goes on forging and recreating the track's rhythmic structure with his fantastic rolls: disturbing and captivating, here is another highlight. Tension remains, reconsidered under a metallic view, in the exciting 'Nightmare on 48th St.', an ominous exercise on electric wildness that shows a mixture of classic Primus, 90s KC and LTE.

All in all, Attention Deficit did a similar thing than Bozzio Levin Stevens: after a first album based on the urgency of initial mutual approximations, a second album came afterwards with a more focused attitude while preserving much of the previous fire. "The Idiot King" is an excellent testament of Skolnick, Manring and Alexander as a well- oiled unit of avant-garde jazz-rock. Thank you, guys!!

OHMphrey - Posthaste review

..
OHMphrey is:
• Chris Poland - guitars • Robertino Pagliari - bass • Jake Cinninger - guitars • Joel Cummins - keyboards • Kris Myers - drums

"Featuring Umphrey’s McGee’s Jake Cinninger, Joel Cummins, and Kris Myers alongside guitarist Chris Poland (Megadeth) and bassist Robertino “Pag” Pagliari, the album evokes reminiscence of heavier, funk laden fusion material ala Jeff Beck and Attention Deficit.

The wealth of talent among OHMphrey’s members is undeniable. Jam fans will surely enjoy the instrumental acrobatics on display, especially within the last two tracks which were recorded live in 2009 and collectively contain thirty-plus minutes of improvisational exploration. Cinninger’s stellar guitar work reflects his jazz and progressive metal influences and is worth the listen alone."

dUg Pinnick - "Blind" non-album single

Dug Pinnick: "Angel EP"
Single from King's X bassist/vocalist, released in advance of his 2nd solo album.

The song 'Blind' is not on the "Strum Sum Up" album.

"Why wasn't blind on the original CD of Strum Sum Up? It's a great track, and is the only one I purchased from the EP because I bought the CD. Maybe it's just a marketing thing, but if you don't have Blind you need to pick it up to complete the CD. It's rough, it's loud and it just fits Dug and what he's done in this recent solo outing. It's grand." - iTunes customer review

MoeTar at ROS-fest 2013

..

MoeTar is playing on May 5th, 2013 in Gettysburg PA for ROS-fest 2013.

Bay Area-based modern progressive rock band, MoeTar, collects seemingly disparate and opposing sonic forces to create a coherent artistic statement for their Magna Carta Records debut, From These Small Seeds.

MoeTar’s two main protagonists, lead singer Moorea Dickason and bassist/songwriter/lyricist Tarik Ragab, along with a versatile crew of musicians, including guitarist Matthew Charles Heulitt (Zigaboo Modeliste, Narada Michael Walden), drummer David Flores and keyboardist Matt Lebofsky (miRthkon) create catchy, yet complex, music that attempts to make sense of our confusing world.

On paper the music shouldn’t work at all. The band flies in the face of logic, yet not a musical note seems out of place. Flaunting their musical fluency, MoeTar doesn’t avoid challenges: they appear to actively court and thrive on them. Indeed. Inherent contradictions are the subject of many of the band’s songs.

So much of what I write about involves paradoxes,” says Ragab. “It seems the rules are set in contradiction to one another.”

Half the fun of listening to MoeTar is hearing how well all of these seemingly incompatible musical pieces fit together. Amid sonic references to Zappa, The Beatles, XTC, Gentle Giant, Stevie Wonder, Laurie Anderson and many others, MoeTar offers a fresh approach to rock, pop, electronica and experimental music. Simply put, From These Small Seeds is the culmination of a collision of styles that seems to defy the odds – and our ears.

MoeTar is:

Moorea Dickason - Vocals • Tarik Ragab - Bass • Matt Lebofsky - Keys • Matthew Heulitt - Guitar • David M Flores - Drums

Sue Draheim

A host of Bay Area musicians – classical and Celtic, old time and bluegrass, Cajun and more – gather for a benefit concert honoring Sue Draheim, a beloved Bay Area musician who now lives in Berea, Kentucky. Sue was recently diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer, and many of her musician friends want to do what they can to offer their support.

The evening will begin at 7:00 p.m. with old time and Cajun music in the lobby, and will shift to the Freight stage at 8:00 p.m. with a string quartet featuring some of Sue’s colleagues from the classical music world. From there, the show will feature many wonderful musicians who played with Sue over the years.

Sue’s musical career began in the late 1960s with Dr. Humbead’s New Tranquility String Band and Medicine Show, and went on to encompass work with John Renbourn, the Albion Band, Any Old Time String Band, Golden Bough, Tempest, and Caliban. Sue also performed with several regional orchestras, the Western Opera Theater, and the long-running light opera company, the Lamplighters. Since moving to Kentucky, Sue has been playing for contra dances.

“Sue is one of the best musicians I have ever met,” the guitarist John Renbourn said. “She is incredibly versatile and her playing in each idiom is always right on the money. When we last saw each other she had a chair in a West Coast orchestra. The enjoyment of listening to Mahler was enhanced by the thought that she could easily slip into the Skillet Lickers. She learned Irish fiddle so perfectly that when the great piper Willie Clancey heard her he was truly moved and I can’t think of a higher accolade than that.”

Guitar Legend Peter Banks Passes

– July 15, 1947 – March 7, 2013

..London, UK – Best known for his innovative and unique guitar work with YES and Flash, as well as his own critically acclaimed solo albums, guitar legend PeterBanks passed away at his home in London on March 7, 2013. Banks, a founding member of the ground breakingprogressive rock group YES, performed on the band’s first two albums, ‘Yes’ and ‘Time And A Word’. He would go on to form Flash and release 3 well-received albums (Flash, In The Can, Out Of Our Hands), along with several successful tours of Europe and the US, culminating in an appearance on the widely watched late night American TV show ‘The Midnight Special’. With an admitted fondness for improvisation, music critics touted Banks as a cross between Pete Townshend and Wes Montgomery. Even Pete Townshend, one night after witnessing a YES performance, walked up to Banks, slapped him on the back and said, “You’re great!”
After Flash, Peter Banks would form the band Empire in the mid ’70s and eventually release 3 albums ‘Mark I’ ‘Mark II’ and ‘Mark III’. During his career, Banks would release 5 solo albums (Two Sides Of…, Instinct, Self-Contained, Reduction, Can I Play You Something?) and had been active in recent times working with acts such as Harmony and Diversity, Prog Collective, ANT-BEE and Days Between Stations. Banks first solo album ‘Two Sides Of Peter Banks’ has been considered by many as one of the great ‘prog’ records of all time and features an all-star line-up of Jan Akkerman, Phil Collins and John Wetton. In the early 2000′s Banks wrote his autobiography ‘Beyond & Before’ published by Golden Treasures publishing in the US. Peter was putting on the final touches of the log awaited live recording ‘FLASH - IN PUBLIC’ CD set for release on Cleopatra Records at the time of his passing.
Peter Banks will always be remembered as one of the pioneers of progressive rock guitar and will be missed by musicians worldwide.

**

We at Magna Carta had the pleasure of working with Peter on a few projects, "Tales From Yesterday" on which he performed 'Astral Traveler'; and the "Encores, Legends & Paradox (music of ELP)" tribute on which he appears on 'Toccata' and 'The Sheriff'.

Pinnick Gales Pridgen reviews at Amazon

-

Just finished playing this magnificent beast of a CD. You want low, low down bass - you got it. You want great vocals - it is here in spades from Pinnick and Gales. You want some manic drumming - then Pridgen's your man. His efforts on Creams - 'Sunshine of your love' is brilliant. He just flays his kit and Pinnick and Gales put in some killer vocals. On top of it all you have Gales ripping some down-right vicious runs along the way. His 6 string attack on the track 'Me and You' is a gem. Kudos to Mike Varney who has turned in a top quality production. The sound is deep, thick, clean and precise. Just a 3 piece, but damn they can go some.

I love Eric and in this trio he has finally got the quality support he deserves. Over the past 5 years Eric has to be on top of the tree when looking at quality & quantity production of music. He just keeps backing up CD after CD. Keep up the great work Eric.

Regards Paul

Pinnick Gales Pridgen out Today!

But the groove really hits its stride on the fourth track, “Hang On, Big Brother.” This song comes out of the gate nasty and never lets up for its five-minute run. Gales and bassist Pinnick trade vocals, as they do on a few tracks. Their voices are very similar, with Gales being a little more subdued and Pinnick wailing away in his inimitable style. The chorus features some nice harmonies, and Gales and drummer Pridgen both get in their shots during the solo portion of the song. The funk gets kicked up another notch on “The Greatest Love,” which features perhaps my favorite riff on the album, a memorable little run that will most definitely get you moving when it comes blasting out of the speakers.

Gales, obviously, is heavily influenced by Hendrix, not to the point of imitation, but there are some definite nods. There are healthy doses of Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton, as well. When he gets to unwind, as on “Hate Crime,” his chops are impressive. “Been So High (The Only Place to Go is Down)” is the signature moment on the album for Gales as far as the blues is concerned. Topping the 10-minute mark, the song gives him plenty of room to stretch out as Pinnick’s bass provides the base.

Dug Pinnick Discusses ‘Pinnick Gales Pridgen’ Album, Gear & More

  - interview with Andrew Bansal at  http://metalassault.com

Known for his work in progressive rock band King’s X, solo albums as well as guest appearances with a multitude of other artists and bands over the past two decades, legendary bassist/vocalist Dug Pinnick of King’s X has now started a new project with blues rock solo artist Eric Gales on guitar and Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta fame on the drums. Their self-titled debut album is set to release on February 12th via Magna Carta Records. A couple of days ago, I had the absolute pleasure of talking to Dug about this album, his solo material, gear and other things. Enjoy the chat below, and visit the PGP’s artist page on Magna Carta here.

I was just listening to the Pinnick Gales Pridgen album, and I must say that all tunes are sounding pretty impressive so far. First of all, tell me how this collaboration came about.

Well, Mike Varney from Magna Carta called me up and asked whether I’d be interested in doing a project with Thomas and Eric, and I said yes. So he put the studio up in the north of San Francisco, we went up there for ten days and did the record!

Pinnick Gales Pridgen in Blues Rock Review

- With a familiar growl on the mic, this trio’s self-titled debut gives the Eric Gales sound a rejuvenated allure. With perhaps a darker perspective manifested in the album, Gales, along with Pinnick (King’s X) and Pridgen (Mars Volta) keep the blues alive and well.  The finished product comes off heavier than Gales’ recent solo work, more grunge with, of course, some rhythm and blues in the mix. This could well be credited to his new band mates, bringing along shades of their previous projects.  We all know the organized chaos that is The Mars Volta sound, and the high-octane rock King’s X put out.

Here’s our traditional plump, sparkly wish to you all, for an especially Happy New Year!
Tempest is getting ready to embark on the next adventure, kitted out with some great new tunes, including some of your old favorites, freshly arranged for 2013.

This year will take us across the wide country, and up and down the West Coast. We hope to see you all along the way, sharing the fun and excitement of the music.

Tempest is starting the Season on Jan. 18, with a special concert in the Central Valley,
at Lindsay Community Theater. So get your red dress on, Fresno, Hanford and Bakersfield!

And this Saturday, Caliban is performing an intimate acoustic concert -- our 8th Annual Show at Mission Coffee in Fremont.

See you soon!

Peace & Love,
Tempest
